How to Block Spam Calls and Text Messages

Life is already hectic enough without having to deal with spammers, con artists, and telemarketers. There is a technique to block the spam calls and text messages from incessant injury lawyers, fake IT specialists, and so on.

In recent years, major carriers and phone manufacturers have stepped up their efforts to block unsolicited calls and messages, so let’s have a look at how you may effectively block them.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • If at all possible, do not answer any calls from numbers you are unfamiliar with. Callers who have something essential to say will almost certainly leave a message. Unfortunately, persons who have enterprises or interests that involve a lot of calls from unknown numbers will be unable to use this method.
  • It’s never a good idea to click on a link or attachment in a spam text message because it could lead to malware infection. If at all possible, avoid opening them.
  • Never react to a spam text message since it verifies your phone number.
  • If you’re not sure if the call or message is from a legitimate company, type the number into your favourite search engine. While verifying a scammer’s phone number can be difficult, verifying a real one is simple. If you can’t locate anything on the phone number, proceed with caution and disregard it. We’ll show you how to block spam calls and text messages from unknown numbers, but you should also report any unsolicited calls or messages.
  • You can report telemarketing, scams, and spam to the FTC. You can also register your phone number with the Do Not Call Registry, albeit this only applies to sales calls from reputable businesses. Unfortunately, many organisations and con artists disregard it.

It’s easy to block individual numbers on your iPhone. Here’s how:

  • Tap Recents in the Phone app, then the Information icon next to the number or contact you’d like to ban. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Block This Caller.
  • Tap the Info icon next to the number, contact, or email address you wish to block in the FaceTime app, then scroll down to Block This Caller.
  • Open a chat with the person you want to block in the Messages app, then tap the contact at the top, hit the Info button, scroll down, and tap Block This Caller.

When you block a caller, you won’t receive notifications when they call or send a message, but they won’t know they’ve been blocked and will still be able to leave voicemails. You can unblock and review callers at any time:

  • Open Settings, Phone, and tap Blocked Contacts.
  • Open Settings, FaceTime, and tap Blocked Contacts under Calls.
  • Go to Settings, Messages, and tap Blocked Contacts under SMS/MMS.

Unfortunately, when telemarketers or scammers approach you, blocking particular numbers isn’t very successful because they use many numbers and change them regularly. There is, however, something else you can do:

  • To silence unknown callers, go to Settings, Phone, then scroll down to Silence Unknown Callers. When you turn this function on, calls from numbers that aren’t saved in your contacts are automatically silenced. They can still leave a message, and the calls will show up in your call history.
  • Messages can be filtered in the same way by heading to Settings, Messages, and scrolling down to Filter Unknown Senders.

If you open a message that turns out to be spam, always press the Report Junk link below it, then Delete and Report Junk.

It’s also simple to block numbers on an Android phone, albeit the technique varies depending on the manufacturer.

  • Open the Phone app on a stock Android device, such as one of Google’s Pixel phones, and select the Recent tab. Tap Block/report spam after long-pressing the number you wish to block. You have the option of unchecking the box labelled Report call as spam and then tapping Block.
  • Open the Phone app on your Samsung phone, go to Recents, tap the number you wish to block, then tap Details and Block.

If you’re receiving a lot of unwanted spam calls and text messages from different numbers, you may want to filter out any unknown numbers.

  • Toggle on Unknown in the Phone app by tapping the three vertical dots in the upper right corner, then Settings, Blocked numbers (or Block unknown callers on a Samsung phone).
  • You can also enable caller identification and anti-spam protection. To acquire the options to See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls, open the Phone app and select the three vertical dots at the top right, then Settings, then Caller ID and spam. (On a Samsung phone, you may just turn on Caller ID and spam protection.)
  • If you have a Google Pixel phone, you may use call screening to have Google Assistant take your calls and provide a transcript for you. To try it out, open the Phone app and hit the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then Settings, Call Screen, and select the desired voice. If you have the spam filter switched on, your calls should be automatically screened, but you can also tap Screen call when a call comes in.
  • Toggle on Enable spam protection in the Messages app by tapping the three vertical dots at the upper right, then Settings, Spam protection.
