Telegram crosses 1 billion downloads worldwide, with India being the largest market

Telegram has become one of the latest apps that crossed one million downloads worldwide, According to the recent reports. This app is a direct messaging app like WhatsApp and messenger and came into existence in 2013.

This app had always given a tough competition to apps like Whatsapp, hike, Facebook messenger, and many more. Telegram got its hype when WhatsApp released its new privacy policy. People got outrageous after reading those policies and most people started using telegram. This app had also released new features like group video calls, screen sharing with sound, and updated voice chats. These features of the app fascinated the new users.

Techtwerk reports that Telegram crossed 1 billion downloads globally last week. Other apps on the list include Telegram arch-rivals WhatsApp as well as messenger, Facebook, and Snapchat

Sensor tower reported India is the largest market of this app with approximately 22 percent of the worldwide population. After India, Russia and Indonesia are the largest consumers of the Telegram app, with around 10 percent of the worldwide downloads.

It also achieved 214.7 million installs in the first half of 2021 which shows a 61 percent year-on-year increase from 133 million installs reported in the same period of 2020. From the recent reports, it has been shown that Telegram had become the seventh most downloaded app globally in 2020.  

In the middle of WhatsApp’s privacy crisis, Telegram and its competitor were able to add millions of new users. Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov claimed the addition of 25 million new members three days after WhatsApp updated its privacy policy. According to a previous Sensor Tower survey, it was also the most downloaded app in the world in January.

This app overcomes WhatsApp’s privacy disaster and adds new capabilities including a revamped voice chat that works similarly to Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces, as well as group video calls with up to 1,000 simultaneous viewers.
